Job Description

Tomorrow.io’s Space & Sensors team is responsible for the development of unique RF-based sensing systems, such as radar and sonar, from architecture through implementation. The team is also responsible for the  development of corresponding spacecraft and constellations in support of Tomorrow.io’s Operation Tomorrow Space, which will collect data to be integrated seamlessly into our existing forecasting and modeling systems, revolutionizing global weather intelligence.

We are looking for a Mission Operations Lead who will develop and maintain our mission operations capabilities. We are taking a light weight “prime” approach to our space program, working with a number of vendors and partners on spacecraft manufacturing and operations, and developing payload and science operations capabilities internally. As such, “mission operations” at Tomorrow.io is includes the overall constellation conops and implementation, with a particular focus on communications and data handling, mission (payload) planning, and scientific operations. This is a unique opportunity to join a passionate and fast-growing team, and to have an integral role in the deployment of our satellite constellation. 

What you’ll do:

  • Develop spacecraft and payload concept of operations (conops), working collaboratively work vendors/partners as well as key internal stakeholders, including software developers, systems engineers, and scientists
  • Develop and lead a small team focused on mission operations. Implement the conops; own and maintain mission operations capabilities
  • Define the operational needs and work breakdown between mission operations and other teams; serve as Product Manager for our mission operations software
  • Manage payload operations on-orbit
  • Communicate and coordinate with external spacecraft operations teams 
  • Complete trade studies and vendor selection for various ground station and communications capabilities
  • Develop procedures, interface control documents, and technical reports

What you bring:

  • 8+ years of relevant spacecraft development, mission operations, and ground station experience
  • Experience with spacecraft (hardware) functional testing
  • Experience working with satellite ground stations (designing/building/operating, and or interfacing with)
  • Experience working closely with software development teams
  • Thorough understanding of all phases of a spacecraft mission including pre-launch, LEOP, commissioning, mission operations, decommissioning, and de-orbit
  • Experience with on-orbit anomaly detection and resolution
  • Thorough understanding of spacecraft subsystems and their interfaces
  • Thorough understanding of orbital mechanics and rigid body dynamics
  • Thorough understanding of the spacecraft and orbital environment (thermal, radiation, etc)

Desired:

  • M.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent field
  • Experience with RF payloads, such as communications or radar (antennas and electronics)
  • Experience in a startup or small company/team environment
  • Experience across of all phases of a spacecraft mission including pre-launch, LEOP, commissioning, mission operations, decommissioning, and de-orbit
  • Experience with on-orbit anomaly detection and resolution

This position requires access to technology that is controlled under U.S. export control laws and regulations. Accordingly, this position is restricted to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and protected individuals unless and until any required licenses are obtained.

Anticipated salary range is $100K-$160K, subject to local market and a candidate’s skills and experience.  Health, leave and other benefits included.
