Our Program Manager is not just responsible for task management and scheduling. We want someone with a creative problem solving approach. We need someone to nudge the engineering teams in the right direction and to stay on track with software development processes. A successful Program Manager will be able to take a broad helicopter view into the organization to understand the dependencies and to do better risk management for interdependent software.
This is not a project manager role, but rather someone who can understand the problem and come up with a creative solution. Shape has a very smart bunch of engineers who don’t need to be told what to do, but rather someone who will work with them to bring the best out.
Every group has a different strategy that works for them. Experience levels vary, so you have to be comfortable working with fresh grads to veterans in software development. Not so much task driven, but rather having the flexibility to understand that every project is different. You cannot create a mold that fits all.
